Colour Tech / Colourtec / Two-pac

When building with Porter Davis, if you want your cabinet doors to have a profile then the one of your only option is to paint them in Two Pac paint or “Colourtec”, as coined by PD.

Apparently you can use category 6 Formwrap as well, however, not all of the profiles are available and because we wanted the Shaker V-Line option, were never offered or shown this Category.

I really liked the Shaker V-line profile and wanted pricing on what it would cost me.

 

In the early stages, I asked WOS what it would cost to have my Kitchen, Galley, Laundry and Bathrooms done in Shaker V-line and colour tech. The lady who escorted us on our WOS tour told me around $4k-5k. Well if I had been sitting down, I would have fallen off my chair – $4,000 just for paint and a bit of routing on my doors. What a rip-off.

We confirmed with our Sales Consultant about the pricing. Yes, he confirmed that the $4-5k bracket to do the whole house was correct. Hmmph, alright then, add it to our quote.

Oh, how I wish those two people had been right, at that time I was indignant at the price, now I see it would have been a steal.

During our research, we started to become concerned about information and feedback we gathered. For instance, we got chatting to one WOS lady who was working in their exterior department, she mentioned that she was currently building with PD and was working for them part-time to help pay for the house build. She had spent $18,000 on Colourtec and not even done her whole house. The HomeOne forum doesn’t have a lot of Colourtec or kitchen prices, that’s one of the reasons I’m writing this post – to help other people in my position to get a grasp on costs and be able to budget accordingly.

So we decided to do some more research and went to a few cabinet makers. Over two weekends we hit up kitchen shop after kitchen shop, talking the sales assistants about the cost of kitchens and Colourtec, or by this stage, we understood to call it Two Pac. Most kitchen shops want you to pay a $2k-$5k deposit before they will spend a great deal of time with you, however, we got a fair idea that our kitchen layout and requirements (Two Pac, soft close, finger pull, stone) would be around $40k to build if we were doing a reno in an existing house, not including the appliances.

One thing that was apparent, was that the $18k we had been told in passing, was far more accurate than the $4k in our quote. This is because Two-Pack is strictly a professional-only product. The hardener contains isocyanate, which is extremely toxic if breathed in, and expensive spray-booths and air-fed breathing apparatus have to be used. Unlike most paints were a simple filter mask will do.

 

The paint consists of different resin, made of acrylic and melamine (the proper title is Two Pack Acrylic Enamel). When you mix your paint, you add a second resin, or hardener, called Poly-isocyanate Resin. At this stage, a chemical reaction takes place between the two resins which make them harden. When Two-Pack has cured it is also much harder and tends to resist petrol, acid rain, sunlight etc    (Paragraphs totally plagiarised from http://www.austinsevenfriends.com/paint.htm)

 

Having research in hand, I swung my arse back into our Sales Consultants office. I was not happy and sick of being given the runaround. No one could even give me an accurate ballpark figure. Was it $5k or $15k or was it going to be more like $25k to do the whole house? I wanted answers and I wasn’t going to leave his office until I had them.

 

And magically, I received the answers I was wanting.

Within the quoting program PD use, they have access to all the “As-builts” of every display home PD has ever built. They have to search their system by Lot number which makes it incredibly difficult as who remembers the Lot number from a house that was built 2 years ago, street names and numbers yes but Lot number no… anyway, I provided a lot of motivation for our sales guy to find me what I wanted.

Below is the gold mine that he provided us, I have typed it all out as the pricing he gave us was all jumbled up and not in a formal quote format.

 

We got pricing for 3 houses, the Forsyth in Habitat, Tarneit which is the house we are building. The Rochdale in Lyndarum, Wollert which we had based our kitchen design on, and the Plaza in Elements, Truganina which was a new build and would have current pricing listed.

Between the 3 houses, we were able to have a good idea of what our cabinetry and Colourtech costs would be and how much to budget.

Below is pricing with breakdowns of each component. Then further down is our house costs and plans for what we did.

There are options to do a mix of Colourtec and laminated panels (not that anyone will offer you this option upfront) but I have not included it in this post and will write about the options later on.

Something to keep in mind, all this pricing was at the time the house was built so you can see cost increases between the 3 sample houses below. Our house pricing is as of mid-2017.

At the time we did not have access or knowledge of the WOS price guide, It hadn’t been distributed to the staff at that point, not that the Colourtech price is all that helpful but the stone pricing is nice to know.

If you have ever read a Porter Davis quote it’s a little confusing, they use the term “in lieu of” a lot and everything is an upgrade on top of an upgrade.

So here’s how it works, you start with building the cabinets, this is all in Laminate, then you upgrade the laminate to Colourtech and your chosen profile, then you add on the stone, followed by the taps, sinks, etc. This equals your kitchen, galley, laundry, bathroom cabinetry costs.
